I adored Zeph & Pippi's 'bottle-play', add in Bump Beetleshack & you've got my heart!

An Adult Egg-Hunt

Sunday morning, Sam & I rose early, dressed in a hurry, skipped our usual early-morn coffee, & made the short drive to my parents house. This was the first year Sam had been invited to breakfast with my family, & a long time since I had had a meal in my family home. There were nerves & excitement.

Shortly after we'd arrived, everyone was ushered into my fathers beautiful native garden, designed & nurtured over several years, for an Easter egg-hunt - imagine five adults* running around their parents garden searching for chocolate like they're still wee one's - followed by a delicious breakfast of buttery croissants, gourmet cheeses, hot cross buns, fresh coffee, mango nectar & numerous bottles of  (non-alcoholic) wine. Small gifts were exchanged, a prayer was said & as quickly as we'd come, it seemed time to go again.

Sunday morning was simple & meaningful - a family coming together to celebrate the resurrection of the Son.

I hope you all enjoyed your Easter weekend, in whatever way & for whatever reason.. I hope it was filled with laughter & love.
xx

Honey Mar-ret's Yogurt Wraps Recipe

Seventeen years ago, my parents moved from a bustling capital city to this mountaintop with their two daughters, a dog & dreams of a simple suburban life.

My father worked as a truck driver & courier, driving throughout Queensland for a week or more at a time, leaving my mother to raise her two baby girls in a new city, far from her family & friends. Fortunately for my mother, not long after settling in she was befriended by a kind-hearted woman, who had just moved-in next door. They hit it off instantly.

Margaret is a widow, living with & caring for her deaf brother. She loves frogs, makes her own yogurt & knits in her spare time.
She also makes for a great listening ear & shoulder to lean upon...& the best adoptive grandmother for little girls, living far from their extended family.

Honey Mar-ret*, as I named her as a child, would walk us home from school, she taught us to play mahjong & knitted blankets for our beds in Winter. We would chat about our day, drink fresh green juices, draw pictures & play with her 100+ frog statues.

Most of all I remember her cooking.

Biscuits, slices & breads, cassaroles, roasts & soups (her pumpkin soup is incredible!), frozen yogurt, jam & my fathers favourite chutney-pickle. Anyone & everyone was welcome in her home, anytime of the day or night, & you were guaranteed to leave with a full belly & an armful of homemade treats.

On Tuesday, I sat down in Margaret's sunny living room, at the very same table we shared afternoon tea at all those years ago...instead this time we chatted about politics & her sore hips.
I brought her a freshly baked Greek Yogurt, Apple & Cinnamon Loaf & a few sprigs of fragrant eucalyptus from the flower market.

She gifted to me a yogurt-maker (yay!), as well as her most loved & treasured recipes from family, friends, plus her own creations. Recipes for simple slices, cakes & afternoon treats; some filled with fruit & spices, others with yogurt & notes of citrus - all in scrawly handwriting on yellowed, dog-eared paper. The kind of recipes one makes year after year.
After many hours of sipping iced-tea & reminiscing, as the sun began to fall, I was bid farewell laden with my treats.

I walked home feeling as if I had been given an incredible gift - something to be treasured, to be passed onto my own young & grandchildren in the future. I have been trusted with treasures that cannot be replaced - a part of her family history.

You see, just a few years ago, my spoilt & inconsiderate self would have politely thanked & smiled, whilst subtly throwing this pile of pages in the trash.
Somewhere along the way I have also adopted the same appreciation for a simple & meaningful life as those before me.
Gone are the days of take-out meals & a highly consumerist lifestyle, instead we have wholeheartedly embraced this beautifully simplistic, homemade & on-our-way-to-self-reliant existence.

These recipes are safely tucked away with my most beloved cookbooks in our kitchen, ready for a weekend of baking or a special afternoon tea. There's fresh, organic, homemade yogurt in our fridge & our bellies are full of the most delicious, herb-laced wraps I have ever tasted.
I'm probably a little too excited to share these wraps with you, but they're the kind of recipe that's too good to keep to myself!

Super simple - seriously it takes me 10 minutes max to make them - & incredibly soft, I can't imagine buying wraps from the bakery again!

Greek Yogurt Wraps

3 cups unbleached all-purpose or spelt wholegrain flour, plus extra for dusting
1 tablespoon of your choice of herbs (I love rosemary or tarragon in this recipe!)
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups greek yogurt (or plain natural yogurt with a teaspoon of lemon juice would be fine too!)
1 tablespoon of oil

1. combine the flour, herb, baking powder, salt & baking soda in a large bowl, mix to combine
2. stir yogurt into flour mix until it for a 'shaggy' dough
3. tip dough onto floured board or counter, knead gently until smooth & no longer sticky - add extra flour if needed until dough is slightly tacky
4. divide dough into 8 equal pieces, roll out to 2-3mm thick, & layer on a plate, dusting with flour & a drizzle of oil in between each wrap
5. heat a griddle or fry pan over a medium heat, bake each wrap until golden & slightly puffed, turn over & cook for another minute or two.
6. serve with your choice of toppings, fillers & condiments - we love smashed avocado salsa, chives, poached eggs & balsamic-oil for breakfast, or grated carrots & beetroot, plenty of watercress, asparagus, & grilled zucchini & pumpkin for dinner.

Oh, & ENJOY!!!

Sam: "I want this one" - she only likes the Lindt bunnies for Easter
Me: my first cuppa of the day whilst enjoying the first light
Tiger: the grass is thick & deep, easily as tall as her shoulders
Appa: watching me...
Quinn: we had to put a collar on her as she wouldn't stop pulling at the stitches - she hates it & sulks - we can't help but giggle as she bumps her way throughout the house

The One With The Bravery Award

This week, our youngest had a date with the vet - time for 'the snip'. She was an absolute trooper.
Sam & I on the other hand, well, one word:
pathetic.

We were nervous wrecks throughout the day; pottering around the house & keeping our hands busy to distract from our nervousness, constantly checking our phones for calls from the vet, & doting on Appa & Tig as much as possible, for we knew much of our attention would be focused upon Quinn in the evening.

By the time that call came, we were beyond ready for our (fur)baby to come home. Our house felt empty without that boisterous ginger cat.
We jumped in the car, & made the short drive to the vet centre. Naturally, we were ecstatic when they brought her out - still groggy & tired from the days events, she looked so small & fragile, in need of much tender loving care. She was even gifted her own 'Bravery Award' for being such a good patient (naturally, as a proud mama, I was beaming) . We listened to the vet's recommendations, "plenty of rest" & "don't let her race around/climb things/play rough", & booked her for a check-up in 10 days time. We were farewelled with smiles & well-wishes, then home we went.

The caring, restful & healing world of the vet centre was a stark difference to what we were met with as we entered our home - & it all started with Appa.
Quinn obviously smelt different, even we noticed the 'sterile' scent, yet to Appa, her 'little sister' was a completely different cat. There was hissing, yowling & scratching. Sam & I soon clued in, & separated the two for a while.
We just weren't as prepared for the next heart-breaking instalment. (Although, thinking back to it all now, I should have trusted my instincts. Oh, retrospect!

We had a siesta in the late afternoon so we could keep Quinn company as she slept off the anaesthetic. I hadn't long dozed off when I realised Sam had climbed into the bed, hugging me from behind, & I felt warm tears rolling down my neck. I groggily asked if she was okay, with a soft, shaky reply, "No...I think Quinn hates me."
After several minutes of uncontrollable tears, Sam regaled to me how she had tried to stroke Quinn, but she would walk away - for my girl & her cat this was incredibly unusual, in fact the absolute opposite of their relationship (seriously, these two are almost inseparable!*). I could see the pain in her eyes, & it broke my heart.
I put my 'grown-up/show no fear' pants on, & explained that Quinn didn't couldn't hate her, & to give it time - meanwhile I was worried it might be true. I thought for sure Quinn would find comfort in Sam. I feared we had made a huge mistake, & it brought me to tears too. We settled back into the bed; I sat, stroking Sam's hair as she slept, before falling asleep myself.

Fast forward several hours, & we were teary again, as Quinn greeted us with nose rubs & loud purrs. She sat atop Sam's chest for an hour, switching between licking her nose & 'padding' her stomach.
Obviously all she needed was time & space. No longer moody, she played with Appa - who had finally realised it was her beloved - & let Tig groom her. We were back to playing happy family!

Now if you've been reading here for a while (...or even a week) you'd know that our animals mean the world to Sam & I. I mean, seriously they are our babies, & we're unashamed to admit it.
I'm overwhelmed by the love I have for each of these quirky creatures, & the affection I receive in return. I can hardly imagine the love I could have for a child - hundredfold?!
Quite honestly, it baffles me.

As I write, Sam & Quinn are snuggled up beside me, both breathing heavily & deep in slumber.
All is well in our home again.

 * Sam raised Quinn from a tiny 3-week old kitten found outside the old theatre; obviously abandoned by her mother, she was cold, damp & barely able to walk - I doubt she would have survived alone.
Sam would get up every two hours to feed & clean the kitten - needless to say they have an incredibly strong bond.

Appa: in the closet...usually a no-go zone, but we turned a blind eye this time as it's been raining for days and I'm sure she's going mad being stuck indoors
Quinn: she made herself comfy behind our pillows this morning - a cosy little nook

Quinn: being cooperative & adorable!

*this quilt belonged to Sam as a child, & was made by Sam's mother with  Shirley Barber's 'fairy alphabet' fabric, circa   1991 - although not my 'style' at all, the whimsical print and sentimental-value has meant it was one of the very few pieces of 'stuff' that wasn't donated during out recent clear out. It is now draped over the end of our bed, keeping animal fur off the covers...and keeping everyone happy.

It's so nice to finally be back here, with you! *insert joy here* I'm playing catch-up this week - in all aspects of my life! We've been battling a good ol' cold for well over a week now, as well as cleaning the house from top to bottom for tomorrows impending house inspection, and the most annoyingly slow internet connection, it makes me want to pull my hair out with frustration.

As crazy as life feels at the moment, we're still making time to enjoy the simple things. There's plenty of gardening, pottering around the house, baking treats and spending quality time together. Last night we ate homemade pizza and watched Legend of the Guardians - my love of owls was deeply satisfied!

I'm definitely looking forward to a new week filled with good health, faster wifi and catching up on what's happening in your little corner of the world!

Have a lovely Sunday!
